Medevac off Kochi
On Nov 21, 2015, the Indian Coast Guard medevaced an Algerian national who suffered a severe cardiac attack onboard the "Mubaraz" which was enroute from the UAE to Tokyo. The maritime rescue co-ordination centre Mumbai received a telephonic message at around 10.30 a.m from the UK Coast Guard that the LNG carrier requires an immediate medical evacuation of the 51-year-old Algerian crew member Ali Chemoune who had suffered a stroke. The patient was in a critical state and had no movement and feelings on his right side of body. The Indian Coast Guard Regional Headquarters (West) directed the Indian Coast Guard district headquarters Kochi to undertake the medical evacuation. After coordination with the master of the vessel and agent, the vessel was directed to head towards Kochi. As the ship did not have any landing space and winching area, the medical evacuation of the immobile patient was extremely challenging. The patient was provided first aid by the medical officer. Considering the patient’s condition, the mission was undertaken in shortest possible time through the helicopter hovering low over the deck for evacuation and safely brought to the "Garuda" at 4.30 p.m. The patient was subsequently shifted to the medical trust hospital at Kochi for further medical management.
Medevac off Goa
An injured crew of the "Mubaraz" was medevaced off Goa by the Indian Coast Guard on Jan 6, 2014. The "Mubaraz", laden with liquefied natural gas was on the way to Das Island from Futtsu. The Philippine crew member Alberto Soriano (33) had suffered a fracture to his hand. ICG’s Goa region received a communication from the Coast Guard’s Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC), Mumbai on Jan 5 that the man had to be airlifted. The maritime rescue sub-centre at Coast Guard District Headquarter directed the tanker to approach the Goa coast. In the meantime, Coast Guard’s air enclave Goa was told to keep a helicopter on stand-by for evacuation. The Coast Guard helicopter took off on Jan 6 in the afternoon and the patient was hoisted. The helicopter then returned to Vasco and the crew was handed over to the local agent for further medical treatment. He was undergoing treatment in a private hospital at Chicalim.
