Survey ship may have detected sunken tanker
The Royal Malaysian Navy said on June 18 it has found the wreck of the "Putri Sea/Aquarius", which was believed to have sunk off Tanjung Pengelih in Johor following an explosion. The navy hydrography vessel "Perantau" has detected an underwater object, which was believed to be the missing tanker, using multi-beam sonar. The ship had lost contact with its agent in Singapore approximately 4.6 nautical miles south-west of Tanjung Pengelih on June 15 at 5 a.m. Six crew members were reported missing.
Tanker sank after explosion and fire, crew missing
The "Aquarius" sank after an explosion and subsequent fire on June 14, 2017, 4,6 miles southwest of Tanjung Pengelih in the Eastern Singapore Strait. The tanker was loaded with fuel and was initially reported to the Singapore Coastguard as missing by its’ Singaporean agent. Singapore contacted the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), which sent a patrol boat, but didn’t find the tanker. It was reported later, that the tanker was on fire after an explosion, and the crew of six Indonesians was missing. The latest AIS dated from the morning of June 14. An SAR operation was launched.
