Noisy cargo ship had Ruston residents steaming
RUSTON, Wash. -- Some residents along the Ruston waterfront are fired up because a cargo ship is tied up right in front of their homes and running engines around the clock. One resident told us she can't sleep at night because of the noise. The Santa Roberta in Commencement Bay is at anchor a short distance from the shore at Ruston Point. It's sitting idle, but engines are still running for the refrigerated containers. That's emitting a noise. The Santa Roberta is anchored there because it can't get into the Port of Tacoma yet. It's one of four container ships waiting to get in. They're all backed up by what shipping companies call a union work slowdown by Longshoremen to gain leverage at the negotiating table. The dock workers have been without a contract for 7 months and they point fingers at the shipping companies.
