Stern of Bareli at Tanguy Ancorage
Salvage efforts on the "Bareli" have continued to progress well. The stern and forward sections of the vessel were safely and successfully separated by Shanghai Salvage Company on Apr 24. The stern section was towed to a safe location at the Tanguy Anchorage. The risk of oil spilling from the vessel has now been significantly reduced as the stern is safely afloat at a safe location and there is no more oil in the double bottom tanks, while the forward section was resting stable on the seabed at the location of the grounding site. Some 1000 containers and 830 tons of fuel oil have been recovered from the vessel by the salvors. Approximately 300 tons of oil still remained in the stern section tanks, while some 200 containers remained in the cargo holds of the forward section. 165 containers are missing, probably fallen into the sea. The "Bareli" has been declared a total loss following the grounding outside Fuquing in Fujian Province, China, on Mar 15.
Salvage work going ahead - wreck expected to split
Salvage operations on the "Bareli" have been ongoing throughout Easter. Although work was hampered by bad weather conditions and rough seas on Apr 6 and 7, progress has been made. According to reports from the salvage company, 650 of the 1,913 containers have been removed from the vessel, while some 580 cubic meters of heavy fuel oil has been pumped out of the oil tanks. Salvage operators are expecting that the stern section may drift apart from the bow of the vessel. Considerable tidal movement on the vessels' double-bottom hull has caused significant stress and metal fatigue, significantly weakening the structure of the 3,ship, that has been grounded outside Fuquing, China, since 15 March. First priority now is to minimize any pollution and maintain control of the ship if the two sections drift apart. The salvage operator, Shanghai Salvage Company has their most experienced team working on the salvage and pollution response. While the "Bareli"-salvage is now into its third week of operation. 15 of the 21 crew members have been released and repatriated. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore started interviewing crew members in Singapore on Apr 9.
300 tons heavy fuel drained, two of the crew repatriated
A total of 300 metric tonnes of heavy fuel oil and around 350 containers have been removed from the "Bareli" by Mar 30. No oil spill to sea has been reported over the last days. Some 30 tonnes of heavy fuel oil that has leaked from an oil tank, was being removed from one of the cargo holds of the ship. Through its insurer Gard, owner is in progress with the Fujian MSA (local maritime authorities) to take over control and responsibility of the salvage operation and is currently concluding a contract with Shanghai Salvage. Two more of the crew have been released and repatriated. The remaining 16 crew members were expected to be released shortly.
