Assistance for distressed tug crew

Fri May 20 17:08:29 CEST 2016 Timsen

The "Maersk Brooklyn" assisted the crew of a distressed tug 25 miles east of Chennai on May 19, 2016. The tug was en route from Vishakapatnam to Mumbai when it developed a crack in the steering compartment, leading to flooding of the cabin which posed a threat of sinking. The Coast Guard Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre alerted ships operating in radius of 50 nautical miles from the tug. The "Maersk Brooklyn" was sailing close to the distressed ship ewnroute from Kattupali to Colombo and was requested to go on standby until the arrival of the Indian Coast Guard ship "Varad" which sailed at 10.20 a.m. and rescued the Crew of 11. They have been brought back to Chennai.

Tug on standby at disabled container ship

Thu Jun 18 10:00:28 CEST 2015 Timsen

The "Maersk Brooklyn" suffered mechanical trouble in the English Canal in the afternoon of June 16, 2014. The vessel went adrift in the heavy traffic channel, but after it was estimated that repair could not be done immediately, the ship was anchored at a safe position at the waterway. At the time of the accident the ship was carrying 4196 TEU, some of them declared with dangerous cargo. The traffic in the region was not disturbed by the disabled container ship, but Dover Traffic warned the vessels passing in vicinity to be cautious. The port authorities on June 17 short past midnight sent the tug "Lomax" (IMO: 9657832) from Fawley to be on stand by in case of need to assist the container vessel. The mechanical problems were estimated to be minor and were to be repaired on board without need of assistance from the shore. The contianer vessel was en route from Antwerp where it had sailed from the SA Deurganck Terminal on June 16 short past 2 a.m. to Marsaxlokk with an ETA of June 22.
