Deadly accident after alarm in cargo hold
A 19-year-old crew member of the "MSC Damla" died on March 29, 2017, after a heavy fall on the vessel which was berthed at the new DP World terminal in the Deurganck dock in Doel. The accident happened after an alarm went on due to the presence of water and oil inside the hold. The victim descended a narrow metal stairs into the hold which was sixteen meters deep and very steep. Possibly it was wet because there had been a thunderstorm around that time at the Waasland port. The sailor has almost certainly slipped, hit his head and then fell down. The staircase was rarely used, mainly only in cases such as an alarm. The deceased sailor was only a few days part of the ship's crew. The boxship left Antwerp on March 30 at 7.15 a.m. and continued the voyage to Le Havre, ETA March 31.
Cargo ship MSC Damla collects surfer swept 6km out to sea off Wollongong
A surfer has survived a night at sea after he was swept six kilometres off the coast of Bulli with only his board to keep him afloat. The man, a Japanese tourist, was brought safely ashore Friday morning after he drifted alongside a 300-metre long container ship and was spotted by crewmen. The 37-year-old man was picked up by Panama-registered ship the MSC Damla shortly after 9am Friday, about 16 hours after he set out from Bulli Beach. Port Kembla Water Police Sergeant Sean Netting said the man appeared unfazed by his ordeal. "[MSC Damla] crew were able to lower the gangway he was able to paddle over and they basically just plucked him out of the water," he said. "We couldn't believe it. "He's out there on a surfboard, adrift, at nighttime. The risk would be hypothermia from exposure to the elements, and drowning, should he have become separated from the board. http://www.bunburymail.com.au/story/4403526/cargo-ship-collects-surfer-who-spent-night-at-sea/?cs=4070
