Passenger ship in Münster occupied by protest group
On April 29, 2020, the group 'Eklat' has occupied the 'Günther' and an Ibis Hotel in Münster. The ship was berhted on the Dortmund-Ems Canal. The group wants to use the campaign to draw attention to the "catastrophic conditions, particularly in the refugee camps on the Aegean Islands. The people in Moria have neither the possibility to keep a sufficient distance from each other nor to take appropriate hygiene measures. We therefore demand the immediate closure and evacuation of the camps and the decentralized, decent housing of the people," the Eklat Münster group stated. The group pointed out that individual hotels or guest houses were currently letting their rooms to homeless people due to the corona pandemic, a possibility which does not yet exist in Münster, the statement continued. Upon request, the management of the 'Günther' commented on the occupation of the ship: "Since the beginning of our history, we and our company have been committed to a human refugee policy. In the past, we have often expressed ourselves and taken a position accordingly." It was stressed that the situation of the people in Moria is "a catastrophe" and that the conditions on site were "not sustainable". Something has to change quickly. But there were certainly better ways to express this as to climb on the ship hooded and with pyrotechnics. "We have no relation to the group that got access to the ship in the early morning hours."
