Change of wind direction could allow bulk carrier to move

Tue Nov 05 11:40:20 CET 2024 Timsen

On Nov 5, the wind situation in the North of Lagoa dos Patos should change and make it possible for the 'Mount Taranaki' to navigate again with rising water levels, after the bulk carreier was stranded in the Itapuã channel, at the entrance to Guaíba, from Oct 31 until Nov 3, For now, the vessel remained moored in the anchorage area in pos. 30° 26' N 051° 04' W, waiting until continuing its journey to Porto Alegre. The grounding caused navigation problems, blocking the entry of at least one more ship, the Panamanian flagged 'EVA Shanghai', which was sailing right behind, and preventing the departure of the 'Inoi' from the port. If the situation did not change, a total of eight ships could be unable to navigate the waterway, according to projections from the lagoon's pilots. The ship's grounding was caused mainly by the lack of dredging of the Guaíba. The successive floods have worsened the situation. Bulk carrier grounded in Itapuã Channel

Mon Nov 04 10:58:59 CET 2024 Timsen

The 'Mount Taranaki' ran aground on the afternoon of Nov 3, 2024, after departing from the Port of Rio Grande, carrying a cargo of barley, bound for Porto Alegre, in the Itapuã Channel, in the Metropolitan Region of Porto Alegre. The vessel was refloated with the help of two tugs. The incident was caused by the low water level of Lake Guaíba in the area of the Itapuã Lighthouse. On Nov 1, the level was only 0.54 meters. Even after the 'Mount Taranaki' was refloated, there wasno confirmation that the ship would be able dock in Porto Alegre, since the level of Guaíba will need to rise in the coming days for the vessel to continue its journey safely. Due to the grounding of the 'Mount Taranaki', navigation in the region was severely affected. Ships docked in Porto Alegre that had already completed their operations were unable to continue their journey due to the incident.
