Tanker hooked torpedo off Portland

Sun Oct 15 13:09:11 CEST 2017 Timsen

An anchor of the "Skaw Provider" hooked a torpedo off Portland in Dorset on Oct 14, 2017. The tanker had dropped its anchor in 15 metres of water off the port. Navy divers removed it during a five-hour operation. The torpedo was spotted while the tanker was heaving up its anchor. It turned out to be a test torpedo that was heavily corroded and thought to be a few decades old. The crew then called the authorities who dispatched the South Diving Unit of the Royal Navy based in Portsmouth. Most of the crew were evacuated from the vessel although six people including the master remained on board in case they were needed to fight a fire. The ship had on board 1000 tonnes of fuel or oil. The cargo was pumped into the aftermost possible tanks to reduce the effects of any explosion, and fire hoses were charged and ready to deploy if needed. The ship was orderer to use her other anchor to steady her, before lowering the fouled anchor, and the torpedo, to several metres below the waterline. The Explosive Ordnance Device Specialists inspected the torpedo before releasing it and lowering it back into the water. After seven hours the torpedo was destroyed. The device, which was extremely corroded was British made and probably came from a test range at Portland which was in use until the 1980s. Despite being a training munition without a warhead, it still presented a considerable danger as test torpedoes can contain highly flammable propellant. Monjasa Makes First Bunker Delivery to New Terminal at Skagen

Wed Oct 28 11:15:19 CET 2015 arnekiel

Our bunker tanker ’Skaw Provider’ recently made the first fuel delivery for our new oil terminal and storage facility in the Port of Skagen, Denmark. All system tests proceed according to plan and we are ready to offer our clients convenient ex-pipe bunkering of all grades by November 2015. Connecting the North Sea and the Baltic region, the Port of Skagen is conveniently located in the heart of Scandinavia. Every year 61,000 vessels pass north of Denmark through the 150 nautical miles long Skagerrak strait. This makes it one of the busiest traffic routes in Europe. From this location, we will soon be ready to service ship owners, operators and charterers non-stop with heavy fuel oil and marine gas oil products. Harsh weather conditions no longer represent a refuelling challenge. Taking bunkers in port in Skagen is a new and convenient opportunity for most vessel types as the terminal has 11m draft and 330m LOA and can accommodate vessels of up to 250kt dead weight. Ambitious and long-term bunkering set-up The terminal and storage facility consists of eight tanks totalling 42,500cbm and high capacity pumping of 800cbm/hrs. This ambitious and long-term set-up reflects our desire to offer our clients the best possible conditions and contains several additional services. For instance, being able to offer customised quality blends and disposal of slops represent other key benefits. http://monjasa.com/media/news-archive/getting-ready-port-skagen
