Hijacked tanker freed by Indonesian navy

Tue May 10 09:34:42 CEST 2016 Timsen

On May 8, 2016, the shipping company of the "Hai Soon 12" lost communications with the tanker for about 12 hours, and the ship did not respond to the company’s attempts to contact the ship. The ship, carrying 4,000 metric tons of Marine Gas Oil (MGO), had sailed from Singapore and was supposed to travel down via Sunda Straits to the Southern Ocean to conduct high seas bunkering/selling MGO to fishing vessels. However, the ship deviated from the planned route and travelled in a southeasterly direction towards Sulawesi instead. The Indonesian Navy started to chase the ship after receiving a tip-off from the Indonesian Maritime Security Board on the crime. The tanker maintained course towards Bawean Island until altering course tracking eastwards short past 10 p.m. On May 9 at 2.30 p.m. the crew of the "Untung Suropati-372" intercepted and boarded the tanker. Nine perpetrators were found on board the ship and were arrested. The pirates were all Indonesian citizens hailing from five different areas. All 21 crew members were safe and not injured. The Indonesian navy personnel, chasing the tanker, had received data from the hijacked ship’s AIS due to which they were able to locate the vessel in the waters of "Aiso". Initial investigations revealed that on May 7 at 8.45 p.m. the perpetrators had climbed up the poop deck from a small boat in waters off Pulau Belitung. The crew was tied up in the mess room. Arrangements were overheard stating the intent to sell the MGO in the night. The tanker was escorted to Surabaya, where it arrived on May 10 at 5.15 a.m. The pirates confessed that they had planned to transfer the ship’s cargo to the Malaysian vessel "Marine Gas Oil". All the suspects have been brought to Surabaya for further investigations.
