Tug in drydock for repairs
The Unified Command completed its response to the "Mike A. Nadicksbernd" at Lock and Dam 52 on the Ohio River on Apr 10. Lightering operations to remove the diesel fuel were completed, and the vessel was transported to dry-dock to undergo repairs. Approximately five gallons of diesel was released during the dry-docking procedure and have been recovered by SWS Environmental Services. The waterway was open to vessel traffic.
Response to tug taking on water continued
The Unified Command continued its response to the "Mike A. Nadicksbernd" taking on water at Lock and Dam 52 on the Ohio River, on Apr 7. The vessel had approximately 47,000 gallons of diesel on board. Lightering operations have completed removal of lube oil and waste oil from the towing vessel. Salvage operations have begun removal of the vessel and barges. The waterway was closed from mile marker 937 to mile marker 941. The current queue was 12 vessels up-bound and 10 vessels down-bound.T
Tug pinned against lock wall and breached
Members of the Coast Guard were at Lock and Dam 52 on the Ohio River on Apr 6, 2017, because the "Mike A. Nadicksbernd" was taking on water in the engine room after she hit the Lock and Dam and was pinned against the lock wall. The vessel was pushing 19 empty barges along with one loaded with steel rods. It had about 4,700 gallons of diesel on board and developed a list to port side. There was no threat to the Metropolis water supply. The waterway was closed from mile marker 937 to mile marker 941. The current queue was nine vessels up-bound and six vessels down-bound. A Unified Command was established consisting of the Coast Guard, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Kentucky Department of Environmental Protection, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and the American Commercial Barge Line.
