MARYAM 6611784
In the night of Nov 14, 2010, the "Maryam" on its way from Jeddah sank in Port Tawfiq in Suez. The crew managed to escape in a hurry, leaving back their personal belongings, and initial losses were estimated to be around $ 750,000. The ship after it arrived from Sudan had been anchored atthe middle pier of Port Tawfiq since Nov 6 waiting to take a cargo of bitumen. It was scheduled to sail to Sudan on Nov 14, but sank after 16,015 tons of bitumen had been loaded. The bitumen barrels came to the surface as the ship capsized. Possibly excess cargo caused the accident. Prosecutors have summoned the captain to find out if the cargo will pollute the water.
