Martha Bruhns in danger of running aground in surf zone off Sylt
On Sep 19, 2012, the "Martha Bruhns" was in danger of running aground with a crew of 3 in winds up to 8 bf at Hörnum-Odde off the island Sylt. The ship had reported the MRCC Bremen to be adrfitone mile west of Hörnum-Odde around 1 a.m. after the propeller was fouled by a net, and in danger of getting into the surf zone. The lifeboat "Horst Heiner Kneten" of the DGzRS-Station Hörnum as well as the "Vormann Leiss" from the station Amrum and the "Minden" of the station List were sent to the casualty. The crew of the "Martha Bruhns“ had tried to anchor, but the anchor dragged, and the ship's drift went on with a speed of 2 knots towards the shore. One hour after the alarm was raised the f/v "Thor“ was the first ship on scene and succeeded to take the "Martha Bruhns" in tow in spite of the difficult weather conditions. The "Thor" was able to pull the casualty out of the danger zone. The small "Horst Heiner Knoten" had some difficulties in reaching the accident site due to the strong surf, but short time later both larger lifeboats were on scene. Meanwhile the net which had fouled the propeller of the "Martha Bruhns“ was losened. The crew requested an escort to Hörnum which was provided by the "Horst Heiner Kneten" and "Vormann Leiss". Short before 5 a.m. the "Martha Bruhns“ was safely moored in the port.
