Coast Guard investigating grounding incident
A U.S. Coast Guard investigation pointed to an electronics malfunction as the reason why the 'Mark W. Barker' lost power, then maneuverability, on the Detroit River before running aground with 20,000 tons of rock salt cargo and 105,000 gallons of diesel fuel on board. After refolating, the ship was taken to a Belle Isle anchorage. Once the ship has been repaired and cleared by the USCG, it may continue on its voyage to Milwaukee. The owner, the Interlake Steamship Co., flew a technician to Detroit to mend its damaged systems. The Coast Guard also has begun interviewing the 21 crew members. Grounding on Detroit River
The 'Mark W. Barker' ran aground in the morning of May 17, 2023, at 7.30 a.m. in the Detroit River on the Canadian side of Belle Isle. The ship was headed from Cleveland to Milwaukee with a cargo of salt when it got stuck near Belle Isle. It had just left Detroit after fueling at the Mistersky dock at 7 a.m. The vessel suffered a mechanical issue. There were no injuries or pollution. With the help of the two Great Lakes Towing Co. tugs 'Pennsylvania' and 'Ontario', the 'Mark W. Barker' was refloated at noon and taken to the Belle Isle anchorage for an inspection of damage before being allowed to proceed.
