Passenger ship converted to wine bar
The 'Marittima' is being converted into a floating wine bar, wine cellar and gathering place with a permanent mooring at Nykøbing's new waterfront. Behind the project is the local wine merchant Jes Joning and a circle of investors. The rebuilding will start in July 2021 at Ring-Andersen's wooden shipyard in Svendborg. Before, the ship has been sailing in the Wadden Sea, on the Copenhagen-Malmö route, on the the Flensburg Fjord, in Lübeck, Travemünde, Glücksborg, Warnemünde, Kühlungsborn and the Canary Islands for ten different shipping companies and operators. Due to the corona pandemic, the 'Marittima' was taken out of service as an excursion ship at Travemünde. The ship has a German approval for sailing until June 2022. In the upcoming wine bar 'Vinoteque Marittima' there is room for 80-100 people.
Investigations for environmental crime
Officials of the water police in Travemünde discovered on Jan 11. 2018, a manipulation of the sewage system of the "Marittima". Due to these technical changes, waste water could be pumped outside without being treated. After consultation and at the request of the prosecutor in Lübeck a search warrant for the ship was obtained at the district court Lübeck which took place on Jan 17 with experts of the classification society and representatives of the competent regulatory authorities at the berth of the ship in Travemünde. During the control the findings were fully confirmed by the experts: On board the controlled vessel additional pipes were installed and existing pipes sealed with blind flanges, so that untreated black and gray water was pumped outside bypassing the stages of the wastewater treatment plant. By bypassing the cleaning and treatment processes of the plant, untreated feces were pumped out over a long period of time and by a multitude of passengers on numerous voyages in the summer months. The water police in Lübeck-Travemünde launched a criminal investigation for suspected water pollution and other investigations for breaches of inland shipping regulations.
Oil spill while bunkering
During a bunkering operation of the "Marittima" 0,6 tons diesel spilt into the Trave on aug 15, 2014, at 9.45 a.m. The ship was berthed at the Ostpreußen Quay in Travemünde when the ship's tank overflowed due to a programming mistake at the tank truck. An oil boom was laid out and the oil recovered by a private contractor. Due to wind and current most of the oil remained at the quay and thus could be recovered.
