Disabled LNG tanker towed to Point Fortin Port

Wed Feb 04 10:51:01 CET 2015 Timsen

The "GDF Suez Boston" anchored off Point Fortin Port, Fort de France, on Feb 2 after having suffered propulsion damage on Jan 23 about fifty miles east of Martinique. After the crew failed to repair the damage, BW GAS quickly chartered two tugs from Somara to halt the drift of the tanker. The "Maito", a tug of the Navy based in Fort-de-France, fought rough seas to approach the "GDF Suez Boston" in order to transfer three technicians sent by the shipowner on board the tanker. The "Maito" then escorted the convoy for two days, ready to support the civilian tugs if necessary. BW GAS decided to carry out n aadditional technical stopover in Fort-de-France with spare parts being shipped to Martinique. The ship was anchored in the mooring area for tankers. A restriction zone with a radius of one mile around the tanker was set up by the prefecture to ensure maximum safety. The tanker has 28 crew on board and was carrying a cargo of LNG loaded in Trinidad and bound to Boston. French report with photos: http://www.meretmarine.com/fr/node/98931
