Tanker adrift off Coatzacoalcos
For some hours the 'Mariano Abasolo' went adrift off Coatzacoalcos and drifted towards the beach for some hours in winds above 60 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 90 kilometers per hour and high swell on Feb 21, 2020. On Feb 20 the port of Coatzacoalcos was closed due to the storm. The unloaded tanker had suffered a mechanical failure and failed to enter the port to shelter from the storm. At 5 p.m. the tanker requested assistance by two tugs to tow it to port, but waves of heights between five and seven feetwere considered to be too dangerous for safe navigation.
