Oil observed at sinking site
After some oil was observed at the sinking site of the "Marin de Marin" which foundered after a collision on Apr 1, the Centre for Maritime Rescue Coordination (CCS) on Oct 28 sent the "Salvamar Mirach" to Vigo to investigate the risk of an oil spill. The ship had on board about eight tons of fuel when it sank. Much was spilt through cracks in the hull immediately after the collision with the "Baltic Breeze". An inspection of the wreck which was resting in a depth of 57 meters which was carried out by divers of GEAS Salvage and the Civil Guard ended with the last body being recovered and the removal of the ship rigging, ropes and other fishing gear which may have presented a hazard to navigation. Diesel and oil was spooted this week by inshore fishing boats.
Search for missing sailor suspended
11 days after the wreck of the "Mar de Marin" the search for the still missing Manuel Domínguez Mallo from Marin has ended on Apr 11. Divers made the last dives to recover the rig which might have endangered other ships. It had already been ruled out that the body of Mallo was inside the wreck. A helicopter once more had combed the area between A Lanzada and the Islands Ons and Cíes where the collision occurred. Research on the causes of the accident continued.
Four dives on wreck without result
The search for the only crew member of the "Mar de Marin" still missing , Manuel Domínguez Mallo, did not yield results on Apr 10, although divers of the Civil Guard and Salvamente Maritimo conducted four dives to the wreck, two were carried out by GEAS and the other by the rescue team with the help of the diver bell. They inspected the area where the body of Nketiah Alexander was found on Apr 9, the forecastle and the vicinity of the wreck. Due to fog the search by sea and air was suspended between the Ria de Vigo and off the Cies Islands.
