Safety certificate cancelled after fire

Fri Oct 21 17:09:19 CEST 2016 Timsen

The Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) in Central Visayas has cancelled the cargo safety certificate of the "Manila Bay 1" which had caught fire while docked in Cebu. Marina also ordered the captain of the "Manila Bay 1" to submit within 24 hours a marine protest containing details of the incident. Coast Guard’s Cebu District had received the fire alarm at about 2:30 p.m. on Oct 20 and put the fire under control about an hour later. The ship was scheduled to sail to Manila in the night of Oct 19 but postponed its voyage because of the typhoon Lawin and was supposed to leave 4 p.m. on Oct 21. Marina will issue a certificate of seaworthiness once an inspection reveals that the ship is safe to travel again.

Thu Oct 20 14:00:58 CEST 2016 Timsen

A fire broke out at the stock room of the "Manila Bay 1" scheduled to depart for Manila from Pier 7 in the Mandaue Reclamation Area on Oct 20, 2016, around 2 p.m. Some of the crew noticed a spark from the engine room’s electrical wiring which caused the fire. All 23 crew members were alerted by Captain Victor Bayotas tried to put out the blaze and called for a tug to help pump seawater into the burning area. One crew member who had difficulty breathing after the incident was brought to a hospital by a waiting ambulance. The Mandaue City Fire was alerted at 2:08 p.m. The blaze was put under control at 2:16 p.m. after around ten fire trucks from different fire stations and volunteer groups responded to the call. Fire investigators and the shipping company had yet to assess the total amount of damage caused by the fire. Gothong Lines is also set to file a marine protest before the Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) for an inspection to be conducted before a sea worthiness certificate could be issued.
