MAINE RESPONDER 9043902
After having spentnearly five months cleaning up the massive oil spill in the Gulf of MExico after the sinking of the rig "Deepwater Horizon", the "Maine Responder" returned to Portland in the morning of Sep 30, 2010. The vessel was greeted by fire boats and the US Coast Guard as it made its way back into Portland Harbor. The ship's crew had worked deploying booms and skimming oil off the ocean's surface in the deep waters of the gulf near the source of the spill. Coast Guard officials say thanks to the ship's crew and the more than 48-thousand people who responded, the clean up, so far, has been a success. The "Maine Responder" is one of 16-clean up vessels put into use after the "Exxon Valdez" spill designed to skim oil in deep water regions.
