Russian freighter released

Fri Jul 22 09:51:30 CEST 2022 Timsen

The Kerala High Court on July 20 ordered the release of the 'Maia I', which had been detained for non-payment of fuel charges to an Estonian firm. The court withdrew its order for the arrest and detention of the vessel that carried arms for the Indian Navy, following the settlement of disputes between the supplier of fuel and the vessel over fuel charge payment. The owner of the vessel and the company that filed the lawsuit held talks and settled the issues that arose. The company then appealed to the High Court of Kerala and withdrew its claim. The court decided to release the vessel from arrest, close the case and let the vessel leave the port. As of July 22, it remained moored off Kochi.

Russian arms carrier detained in Cochin

Wed Jul 20 12:09:38 CEST 2022 Timsen

The 'Maia I', en route from Novorossyisk with a cargo of arms for the Indian Navy, has been detained at the Kochi Cruise Terminal in Cochin on July 18, 2022, for non-payment of bunker bills of $23,500 to an Estonian company, following a ruling of the Kerala Court. Justice Sathish Ninan issued the order after considering an admiralty suit (Adml. S. No. 4/2022) filed by TX Harry of Karuvelippady in Kochi, who is the power of attorney holder of Bunker Partner OU based at Tallin in Estonia. As per the petition, the claim for payment is for the value of bunkers supplied by the Estonian company to the Russian vessel. In the order, the court noted that the vessel is presently lying at Cochin Port Trust (CPT) within the territorial waters of the high court and ordered the deputy conservator of ports at the CPT to execute the arrest warrant and effect the arrest, seizure, and detention of the vessel.
