Destroyed tanker arrested enroute to breakers in Aliaga
Damage surveys and legal investigation aboard the "Maestro" have been completed and a towage approval had been issued by the Harbour Master in Kerch. It was planned to tow the vessel from Kerch to an Aliaga scrapyard. The towage operation has commenced on May 6. During the Istanbul Strait passage, the passage permission and towage approval were suspended by Turkish authorities due to legal incident investigation filed against the owners of the vessel, related with the fire, explosion, together with injured and dead crew members. On May 10, the vessel was shifted from the Istanbul Strait to Haydarpasa and arrested by both the Harbour Master and the Public Prosecutor. The vessel's departure and towage permissions has been cancelled by Turkish Authorities until the completion of legal steps. The vessel entered an Aliaga scrapyard on Aug 1. Fire on tankers out
The fire on the "Maestro" and "Candy" could be fully extinguished, and cooling operation were completed by the salvage teams. The vessels will be towed by tugs to nominated places in order to carry out further technical inspection. Both vessels remained stationary at the incident location on Feb 23.
Tankers burning in fourth week
The fourth week has gone since the onset of a fire on the "Maestro" and "Candy" loaded with liquefied gas in the Black Sea. The Russian tug "Mercury" periodically cools the anchored ships. It was difficult to predict when the burning will stop which may take another week or two. One tanker has drifted into the territorial waters of Russia, the second was located nearby in neutral waters. The 12 rescued crew members were discharged from the city hospital on Jan 25, the next day they left the Crimea. The "Candy", the former "Venice" and the "Maestro" in November 2018 were mentioned in the US Treasury information warning of the risk of US sanctions. Washington claimed that since 2016, ships have been supplying fuel to Syria.
