Tanker to be lightered after fire
The fire which broke out aboard the "Lux" enroute to Luxembourg on the Rhine between Leubsdorf and Linz on May 14 was caused by a technical malfunction in a fuse box in the engine room and spread to the living quarters then. The 2.000 tons diesel fuel will have to be lightered and the ship then towed away.
Tanker ablaze on the Rhine
The "Lux" caught fire on the Rhine off Leubsdorf on May 14, 2012. The fire rescues of Linz, Remagen, Sinzig, Bad Hönningen und Bonn were called to the burning ship which had reported a fire in the living quarters at 2.50 p.m. The ship had a crew of four and a cargo of 1900 tons diesel fuel. The Belgian flagged "Nairobi" took the ship in tow while the fire brigades which were on scene with 169 men and 30 engines as well as a boat approached the tanker from both sides. Dense smoke emerged. About 4 p.m. the fire in the engine room and the cabins was under control. The Rhine had to be closed for ship traffic between Linz and Breisig, also the A 55 ashore was affected.
