Draining of fuel supported by helicopters
Workers in Mauritius on March 9 began pumping 130 tons of fuel from the ÄLu Rong Yuan Yu 588'. A small amount of lubricant oil spilled into the sea, but the hull remained intact. Police helicopters were helping to remove the diesel fuel and oil lubricants because the ship is stranded in shallow waters inaccessible to tugs. It was expected to take up to five days to drain the fuel from the ship and remove it from the reef. The Ministry of Fisheries has launched a preliminary investigation into the accident. Draining of fuel and investigation have started
The Mauritius Ministry of Fisheries has launched a preliminary investigation into the circumstances in which the 'Lu Rong Yuan Yu 588' ran aground on the reefs at Pointe-aux-Sables. Captain Jean Hubert Noel, Principal Nautical Surveyor, has been appointed to lead the investigation. On March 7 at 5:38 p.m. the captain of the trawler made distress calls which were picked up by the Mauritius Radio Service. 12 hours earlier, at 6.15 a.m., a request was made for bunkering and to allow refueling in the port. On March 9, the operation to remove the 130 tonnes of diesel and lubricant from the trawler has started with the installations of pipes and other equipment. Polyeco deployed anti-pollution booms around the vessel to prevent any spread of oil in the event of a leak on March 8. A DHRUV helicopter evacuated the 16 crew members which were quarantined in a hotel. Police officers were dropped off by helicopter to secure the trawler's log books. There was no VDR on board.
