Two fishermen saved in the Skagerrak
The ferry "Stena Saga", sailing between Frederikshavn and Oslo, came to assist the "Lis Katrine RI 192" which sank after a water ingress in the engine room in the Skagerrak on March 22, 2017, at 4.30 a.m. The crew observed a flare in a position 9,5 nautical miles north of Skagen and immediately alerted the Defense Operations Center. Soon after the ferry found a liferaft with two fishermen inside and recovered them at 5.15 a.m. with their FRB. The fishing vessel had already sunk at that time. Winds were blowing with 15 meters per second, and it was a wave height was about two and a half meters. After the rescue the fishermen stated that their wooden ship had suffered a sudden water ingress. They only had time to put on immersion suits and fire off flares before they had to abandon ship. The Danish rescue center deployed an SAR helicopter of the Squadron 722 in Aalborg, another helicopter from Sweden, a lifeboat from Skagen, the frigate "Iver Huitfeldt" and another ferry. The two fishermen were hoisted onto the helicopter at 5.43 a.m. only after having been stuffed with dry clothes and served with coffee, and were immediately checked and serviced by a doctor from the squadron. After the arrival at Aalborg their repatriation to Hvide Sande was arranged. The lifeboat patrolled the position where the "Lis Katrine" had sunkin a water depth of about 80 meters in the Skagerrak before being stood down.
