"Bomb" was a dummy

The bomb-like object that was left on the "Lapin", which was hijacked off the coast of Malaysia on Feb 13, has proven to be a dummy. There were only some wires and a battery but no detonator or explosives. The pirates had informed the crew that the explosive package was left on board and threatened the crew not to move before they fled. The "bomb" was placed on one of the ship's bridge wings, after up to eight armed pirates had discharged 2,000 tons of oil. None of the ship's 15 crew members were hurt in the hijacking, but the ship's communications equipment was destroyed. It is believed to be the first time pirates were using a bomb-like object to threaten the crew on a hijacked tanker. Only then Lapin entered Thai waters on Feb 15, the authorities could be informed of the incident. The "bomb" was then destroyed by a bomb squad of the Army.

Oil thefts left device resembling a bomb

On Feb 13, 2015, at 8 p.m. the "Laoin" was boarded by pirates in position 03 11N 100 43E, 40 miles northwest of Port Klang in the Malacca Strait. 6 to 8 pirates, presumably Indonesians, armed with guns and swords, boarded the vessel and captured the 10 crew members. The tanker was loaded with bunker fuel, 2,000 tons of which were siphoned to another vessel, which moored alongside the "Lapin". After the cargo theft the pirates left tanker, leaving on upper bridge a homemade bomb which like TNT held together by electrical wire. The "Lapin" sailed to the southern Thai province Satun where on Feb 15, the captain Theekhathat Charoensuk sought help from another vessel after navigating the tanker into Thai waters. The navy has sent bomb disposal experts to the ship, which was anchored 11km from Pak Bara. At 05.30 a.m. on Feb 16 the tanker was north off Ko Ta Ru Tao island in the Satun province.
