Fire in scrap cargo extinguished

Wed Dec 11 12:11:47 CET 2024 Timsen

The fire that broke out in the cargo hold of the 'Langeland' in the port of Arinaga, in Agüimes, was officially extinguished on Dec 10 shortly before 6 p.m., the Las Palmas Maritime Authority confirned. Initially an unsuccessful attempt was made to extinguish the fire by covering the hatch covers to use the djip's own extinguishing system. The stern one was closed, but the bow one already had some electrical damage and did not allow it. As recommended by the emergency personnel, it was decided on the night of Dec 9 to let the fire self-extinguish given that small explosions were occurring and because there was a risk that the ship would list. The fire was apparently under control, but on the morning of t Dec 10, it re-ignited, and it was decided to intensify the fight against the fire with water and foam from the quay and from the sea with a water cannon from a tug. The ship started to list to starboard side due to the weight of the water. Once the flames were extinguished, the firefighters from the Gran Canaria Emergency Consortium entered the ship to try to inspect its condition and to fill the hold with foam as a precaution. After the firefighters were stood down, the ship was left under surveillance by the port police and the crew members. The fire could have started spontaneously, by self-combustion, given the nature of the cargo, during the loading operation of the ship. The Capitanía Marítina, Salvamento Marítimo, Autoridad Portuaria de Las Palmas and the Consorcio de Emergencias de Gran Canaria responded, and a retired ship. which was in the port at the time of the fire, was removed from the area. An investigation will have to be opened into the cause of the fire. Fire in Arinaga

Wed Dec 11 11:55:49 CET 2024 Timsen

On the afternoon of Dec 9, at around 4.30 p.m. a fire broke out in the scrap filled cargo hold of the 'Langeland' in the port of Arinaga. Emergency services responded to the accident at the dock, in the Gran Canaria municipality of Agüimes, which occurred during the cargo operations. Initially, the ship's crew tried to put out the flames with their own means, but were unable to do so, as the fire and smoke rapidly developed. The firefighters from the Gran Canaria Emergency Consortium were alerrted and tried to put out the flames with the help of a fire ladder. The large column of smoke that has risen as a result of the strong wind blowing in the area was heading south. A part of the ship's crew has been evacuated to ensure their safety, while some others have remained on board to help with the extinguishing work. Operations at the port of Arinaga have been halted for safety reasons until the fire extinguishing work has been completed. A helicopter of Salvamento Marítimo has also been sent to the area.
