Crew taken off disabled trawler
The "Lady Gudny" was experiencing fuel filtration problems on Jan 5, 2017. In the morning of Jan 6 the Kodiak-based Coast Guard buoy tender "Spar" was on the scene and prepared to take the trawler in tow, until the towline parted, disabling the "Spar". In the morning hours the "Lady Gudny"’s stock of fuel filters had run out and the main engine could no longer run, leaving the vessel dead in the water in 3 to 4 metre seas and approximately 50-knot wind speeds. The four crew were members were airlifted off and taken to Air Station Kodiak, while the Coast Guard cutters "Hickory" and "Douglas Munro" were launched and the cutter "Alex Haley" has been diverted to the scene to assist the disabled "Spar". The tugs "Chahunta" and "Anna-T" were also responding. Report with photo: http://www.fiskerforum.dk/en/news/b/alaska-fishing-crew-airlifted-to-safety
Fishing vessel on dangerous course
The "Lady Gudny" was one of three ships because Coast Guard vessel traffic system personnel intervened in the transit becaue they were on course to run aground or at risk of collision in Puget Sound this week. The members of Coast Guard Vessel Traffic System Puget Sound used unconventional means to contact two of the vessels after VTS personnel were unable to reach them by mandated communication channels, and helped troubleshoot a GPS discrepancy with the third. On June 20, 2016, VTS personnel initiated a digital selective calling alert to the crew of the fishing vessel "Northwind" after all other attempts to contact them via the required radio channels 05A, 13 and 16 failed while the vessel was observed exiting the traffic lane and heading toward Buckeye Shoal. The second case occurred on June 21 when VTS personnel coordinated with the master of fishing vessel "Autumn Dawn" to troubleshoot a plotter discrepancy that had the vessel outside the traffic lane and on a course close to Peapod Rocks. On June 22, VTS personnel worked with the crew of a nearby tug to make contact with the operator of the "Lady Gudny", after numerous failed attempts were made over 5A, 13, 14 and 16, while the vessel was observed entering the oncoming traffic lane and heading toward Marrowstone Island.
