Dad ‘died needlessly’ in ‘easily preventable’ accident at Hartlepool quay

Wed Nov 25 09:57:41 CET 2015 arnekiel

Dad ‘died needlessly’ in ‘easily preventable’ accident at Hartlepool quay. He fell 30ft from a stack of large steel pipes as they were being loaded by crane onto a cargo ship at Irvine’s Quay, Hartlepool, on September 9, 2012. PD Teesport was fined £400,000 and agreed to pay £107,684 court costs when the company was sentenced at Teesside Crown Court on Monday, for failing to protect Mr Harrison, from Middlesbrough. After the hearing, HSE inspector Cain Mitchell said: “Robert Harrison, a father of three, lost his life needlessly because of the failure by PD Teesport Ltd to put effective safety measures in place. Firm in court over Hartlepool dock worker’s death fall

Wed Apr 15 10:38:28 CEST 2015 arnekiel

PD Ports is being taken to court by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) after dock worker 59-year-old Robert Harrison - who was employed by an agency - was killed in a 30ft fall on a ship at Hartlepool, in September 2012. PD Ports is being prosecuted for an alleged breach under the Health and Safety at Work Act. Representatives for the company appeared at Teesside Crown Court yesterday. They were not made to sit in the dock but in the court behind the company’s barrister. Mr Harrison is understood to have been supervising the loading of large steel pipes into the hold of a vessel at Irvine’s Quay when he fell from a platform. He fell around 30ft, approximately eight metres, down a hatch on to the steel floor of the hold of the ship, the Bright Ocean. http://www.hartlepoolmail.co.uk/news/crime/firm-in-court-over-hartlepool-dock-worker-s-death-fall-1-7210444

Docker fell into cargo hold and suffered deadly injuries

Mon Sep 10 10:51:55 CEST 2012 Timsen

A dock worker was killed after falling 30 feet into the hold of the "Bright Ocean" on Sep 9, 2012, in Hartlepool, where the ship had berthed two days ago having come from Terneuzen. The 59-year-old man was supervising the loading of large steel pipes into the hold of vessel at Irvine’s Quay, when he fell down a hatch. He hit the steel floor of the hold which left him with suspected head, spine and back injuries. The vessel’s crew rang the emergency services and paramedics, the Great North Air Ambulance, police and three fire engines from Stranton Fire Station rushed to the worker’s aid at 7.30 p.m. After being given the go-ahead from doctors, another worker used a dock crane to winch the stricken man to the shore where he was then placed into the air ambulance and flown to the James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough. He died shortly after getting to the hospital. Inquiries were ongoing on Sep 10, but it was likely that the investigation would be handed to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Scenes of crime officers have attended to help further the investigation by the HSE. Report with photo: http://www.hartlepoolmail.co.uk/news/local/docker-dies-after-30ft-fall-1-4912805
