Patrol boat damaged in berthing manoever

Fri Feb 21 11:19:13 CET 2025 Timsen

The OPV 'LÉ Niamh (P52' suffered damage on Feb 19, 2025, in Cork Harbour, while conducting Sea Acceptance Trials in the port following an extensive period of overhaul. The ship was returning to the Cork Dockyard on the afternoon, when it allided with the quay, resulting in a gaping hole in its side above the waterline. No personnel were injured in the incident. The ship had departed from a quay alongside the dockyard in Rushbrooke, near Cobh, to carry out the trials beyond the entrance of the harbour. The damage meant the vessel will need extensive repairs and will be out of action once again. Fire during maintanance

Sat Oct 03 22:33:14 CEST 2020 Timsen

A blaze damaged the 'LÉ Niamh' while it was moored in Cork Harbour on Oct 3, 2020. No-one was injured in the blaze, which broke out in a storage compartment aboard the vessel at 12.15 p.m. at the Cork Dockyard at Ringacollig, Cobh, while moored for routine maintenance work. The ship’s duty watch raised the alarm and carried out “first-aid fire fighting” to contain the blaze before they were joined by the Cobh Unit of Cork County Fire Service. They were joined by units of the Cork County Fire Service from Midleton and Bandon and a unit of the Cork City Fire Service before bringing the fire under control. Naval Service engineers will carry out an examination of the vessel on Oct 4 oncce it is safe to do so to assess the extent of the damage and establish the cause. The fire was thought to have started in a stores compartment adjacent to where cutting work was being carried out by engineers.

The "Lé Niamh" recovered 125 migrants off a rubber craft in the Mediterranean 60km north-east of Tripoli on Sep 19 at 2 p.m. The operation was completed on Sep 20 by 4 p.m. The Defence Forces were alerted about the craft by the "Stjenenorg" that was sailing in the area. The 125 rescued people on board received water, food and medical assistance where required. The "LÉ Niamh" headed to the Italian Naval vessel "Bergamini" where it was expected to receive the transfer of around 140 other migrants and travel onto a safe Italian port.
