Report: Mobile phone caused ferry accident
The Nagu–Korpo ferry 'L-317' drifted ashore on Korposidan after losing control in April 2023, and allided with the mooring at Korposidan after the crew lost control of the ferry. The Accident Investigation Centre's report on the incident is now ready and states that the maneuverability was lost due to a mobile phone being pressed against the touch screen of the ferry's power control system, causing the system to switch to manual mode. According to the report, the mobile phone was kept on top of a touch screen during the accident. Due to the vibrations of the ferry, the phone accessed a button for selecting the operating mode. According to the instructions, the mobile phone must be within reach of the helmsman in the cockpit, who thought it was a disturbance in the ferry's power supply and was unable to restore maneuverability. About 40 seconds after losing control, the ferry allided with the bridge flap and shortly afterwards with a nearby pier in the marina. No passengers or cars were on board the ferry at the time of the accident. The allision caused no personal or environmental damage, but damage to the side of the ferry. In addition, there was damage to the marina's piers and buoys. The ferry was able to return to service five days after the incident.
