Collision in Likoni

Wed Jul 22 23:01:51 CEST 2020 Timsen

The 'Kwale' was in collision with the newly procured ferry 'Safari' on July 20, 2020, at 3.30 p.m. She was sailing from Mombasa island with passengers and vehicles when she lost steering power and slammed into the 'Safari' which prepared to sail across the Likoni channel to the island. Passengers on the breached 'Safari' panicked and fled the vessel back to the Likoni mainland as vehicles were removed from the ship which had a hole in the hull so that water was flooding the engine room. The vessel has been assisted by the KPAS tug 'Simba' to get to a safe position.

Ferry stalled at Likoni

Tue Apr 11 12:26:35 CEST 2017 Timsen

On Apr 10, 2017, the "Kwale" got stuck at the ramp for abouat an hour at the Likoni crossing channel in Mombasa. The ferry was crossing from the island to the mainland when it stalled. The ferry had overshot when it docked at the ramp on the island causing it to delay the take-off. Panic-stricken passengers opted to alight from the ferry as security officers urged them to remain calm when it failed to take off. The "Harambee" took the ferry in tow. Participants attending the ICT Summit which is being held in Diani, Kwale County were delayed for almost two hours. The ferry went back into operation after engineers inspected it. The situation was made worse by the low water tide.
