Damen delivers new Gambian ferry a month ahead of schedule
Damen has delivered Kunta Kinteh, a new 2,000-passenger ferry, to a client in the Gambia more than a month ahead of schedule. Damen’s subsidiary Niron Staal in Amsterdam built the hull in just 70 days, and the vessel was then outfitted at Damen Shipyards Gorinchem, the Netherlands. Set to operate between Gambian capital Banjul and Barra, the ferry has been designed with a flexible layout so it can be configured to carry both passengers and vehicles, or just passengers. It will begin service at the end of June 2017. “This special ferry has been designed in close cooperation with the client and this has resulted in a safe, fuel-efficient and maintenance-friendly vessel built to the latest standards in shipbuilding,” said Peter Post, Damen’s sales manager for Africa. “The ferry is built under Bureau Vertias class.
