Pacific International Lines to pay $2.2M in criminal penalties

Sat Feb 23 09:13:29 CET 2013 arnekiel

Pacific International Lines, a Singapore-based container ship company, is being ordered to pay $2.2 million in criminal penalties for concealing illegal waste water discharges in a falsified oil record book. The company pleaded guilty in federal court in Washington to making false statements to the U.S. Coast Guard and violating a law designed to prevent pollution from ships. Pacific International operated the vessel Southern Lily 2 in American Samoa. The oil pollution was discovered in a routine inspection by the Coast Guard, which found that the ship's oil water separator was not functioning. This is the second recent case involving dumping in waters off American Samoa. Last month, a New Zealand fishing company was ordered to pay $2.4 million and sentenced to three years of probation for dumping oil waste. Southern Lily 2 still held in American Samoa

Mon Jul 09 09:10:23 CEST 2012 arnekiel

The container ship Southern Lily 2 is still being prevented from leaving American Samoa’s Pago Pago port. This is the second week since the ship has been detained after a Coast guard inspection found problems with the vessel’s water oil separator pump which ensures that only water is discharged from the ship. Parts were to be flown from Singapore to make repairs and the owners were hoping to get clearance to leave port as soon as the repairs are done. But it is understood the case has been referred to the Department of Justice and it is expected that criminal charges will be filed. Some of the cargo on the ship is intended for this week’s wedding of Tonga’s Royal Crown Prince Tupouto’a ’Ulukalala. Also held up are plastic water bottles for one of Samoa’s leading suppliers of bottled water Le Vai. News Content © Radio New Zealand International

Southern Lily 2 detained in Pago Pago by US Coast Guard

Thu Jun 28 07:27:25 CEST 2012 arnekiel

Southern Lily 2, a fully-cellular container ship operating on Pacific Asia Express’s Pacific Direct Line, has been detained in American Samoa's Pago Pago port by the US Coast Guard for possible pollution violations, Lloyds List reports. During an inspection in the American Samoan port, the Coast Guard found problems with the vessel’s oil and water separator, which is meant to ensure that clean water only is discharged from the ship.
