Barge stuck in lock after allision
The unloaded "Köpenick", 2563 ts (EU-No.: 4033340), upon entering the Main lock in Offenbach near Frankfurt, allided with the wall of the Northern chamber in the evening of Nov 21, 2018. The ship first hit a wall with its starboard side. Due to the force of the impact it veered to port and got stuck with its port side bow at an edge. The hull was torn open on two meters length, but no cargo spilled. The ship, however, was caught, and the lock was blocked. In the foremidday of Nov 22 the salvage started by slowly rising the water level of the river which may take some time due to the general low level on the Main. It was expected it would take 2-3 hours before the barge may be freed and taken to a yard for repairs. Several ships were affected by the closure of the lock for traffic. The ship was freed around 11 a.m. and allowed to continue with some restrictions as the breach was above the waterline. Also the lock suffered damage.
