Cooling operations continued

After the KNP 'Tandemand', which serves the Karimun-Batam route, caught fire about 0.72 nautical miles south of Telaga Punggur with 17 crew members on board, the incident was first reported by the vessel SMS 'Steadfast' to the Batam VTS at 2:49 p.m. The Batam VTS immediately forwarded the information to the patrol boat KN 'Kalimasadha-P 115' for further action. At 313 p.m., the Head of the Base received information from the Operations Coordinator about the fire which broke out while the ferry was anchored in the waters of Pulau Kasam. As part of the response, the vessel 'KN.P 376' departed from Batu Ampar towards Telaga Punggur at 3:29 p.m. to inspect the condition of the KNP 'Tandemand'. As of 6:38, p.m. the KN 'Rantos'was still at the fire site, conducting cooling operations to ensure the fire was fully extinguished.

Fire heavily damaged ferry

The KMP 'Tandemand', serving between Batam and Sei Pakning, Riau, caught fire while anchoring near Kasam Island, Batam City on Oct 2, 2024, at 2.20 p.m. WIB. The fire broke out on the upper part of the ship and engulfed the wheelhouse and a part of the passenger area. The ferry was not operating at the time of the accident. Several ships from the Indonesian Navy, Police, and Basarnas were at the scene to evacuate the 12 crew members, who were transported to shore. The process of cooling the ship was ongoing with the assistance of a joint SAR team and a number of ship s. The cause of the fire was still under investigation.
