Search for missing persons stopped
The joint Search and Rescue team has officially stopped their search for the remaining two missing victims of the fire on the "Santika Nusantara". SAR team have combed various parts of the vessel that were safe enough to enter including the upper deck, bridge, and the crew cabin area, but didn?t find any additional bodies. There were still areas that they were not able to check as it was still hot and unsafe. One body was found on the deck of vessel o Search and rescue team equipped with self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) was able to board the vessel only today ann Sep 5. The body of a possible missing passenger was retrieved. The deceased will be brought to a hospital for identification.
Gutted ferry still emitting smoke
The KMP "Santika Nusantara", which has been towed to Gresik on Sep 1, was still emitting black smoke on Sep 3. Local authorities who assessed the vessel could still feel the heat coming from the vessel at a distance of about two to three metres away. Smoke was coming from different parts, which deemed it unsafe to board yet. So far, they had only been able to check outside the vessel, while it was cooling down. The National Committee on Transportation Safety gathered data as part of their investigation to determine the cause of the fire, which included interviews of the passengers and crew members.
Wreck drifted 145 miles from incident site
The Indonesian Navy on Aug 27 has discovered the new location of "Santika Nusantara", after it drifted nearly 145 nautical miles away from the incident location. Two aircraft and two warships were deployed to monitor the wreck. An SAR team planned to board the vessel to check if there were more victims trapped inside. Also, the local authorities reportedly stated that they will instruct the shipping company of the vessel to tow it to the coastline.. The vessel has shifted from its original position due to winds and waves. According to reports, the fire had started in the stern area, where the vehicles were stored. The National Transportation Safety Committee (NTSC) has begun interviewing passengers and collecting data as part of their investigation.
