Fire caused by welding sparks

Mon Nov 14 22:08:08 CET 2011 Timsen

A fire broke out on the "Khalijia III" in the afternoon of Nov 14, 2011, and was brought under control only three hours later. The "Khalijia III" has been moored at the Mumbai Port Trust since its collision with the "MSC Chitra" in 2010, causing the worse oil spill in the Arabian Sea. The fire brigade received a call around 4.30 p.m. about a fire near the engine of the ship which is actually getting scrapped at Darukhanna. Workers may have been using gas cutters. Sparks from this must have come in contact with the residual oil in the ship.

Ship to be broken up very soon

Fri Jun 10 07:25:34 CEST 2011 arnekiel

MV Khalijia 3, the huge vessel which collided with another ship, MSC Chitra, in August last year, will be broken very soon, as the Bombay High Court (HC) has finally approved its sale. Khalijia 3 is in the sea around 1.5 nautical miles away from Mumbai’s coast, towards Mandwa Jetty. The HC also gave directions to the Bombay Port Trust (BPT) on a range of dates on which Khalijia 3 will be allowed to beach - hauled ashore. The dates range from June 14 to June 19. The approval could not be completed on Wednesday as BPT was non-committal on beaching dates for the vessel. The ship will be broken after it is sold Micky Shipping is the company that has bought the vessel for around Rs 18 crore. The company informed the court that as soon as the vehicle is beached, the ship-breaking process will begin at BPT itself. Khalija 3 sold to Micky Shipping

Thu Jun 09 10:30:19 CEST 2011 Timsen

The Bombay High Court finally approved the sale of the "Khalijia 3" on June 8, 2011. The vessel has been anchored off Mumbai since it’s collision with the "MSC Chitra" in August 2010. The order cleared the way for the sale of the vessel to Micky Shipping for around Rs 18 crore. The sale, however, could not be completed as the Bombay Port Trust was non-committal on granting a plot to the vessel for beaching. During the HC hearing, the buyer, Micky Shipping, sought a date around which the vessel would be allowed to beach. The court directed the BPT to come with their register which has details of the availability of the plots for beaching purpose. The court is likely to pass a final order on the issue on June 9. Earlier during the hearing, the BPT sought an insurance of Rs 100 crore for any damage caused by the vessel while it’s being brought to the shore. The ship is currently anchored around 1.5 nautical miles away from Mumbai’s coast, towards the Mandwa Jetty. The BPT agreed for an insurance of Rs 10 crore and the vessel itself. However, it remained non-committal on the beaching date.
