0,5 tons oil of sunken ferry collected
On Jan 23 oil of the sunken roro ferry "Finnbirch", 15396 gt (IMO-No. 7528609), was pumped aboard the Coast Guard's ship "KBV 033" from the submerged container that collects diesel oil from the leaking wreck between Öland and Gotland. Approximately 500 liters of oil could be disposed of at the second discharge. Just over 600 liters of oil has thus been prevented from leaking into the Baltic Sea. The Coast guard will continuously empty the container until the wreck no longer leaks. The Coast Guard has used a custom-built container turned upside down over the leaking wreck with a hose up to the surface where the oil can be pumped and emptied regularly. It was in the middle of December 2019 that a Coast Guard's aircraft discovered the discharge in connection with a routine flight. The wreck is at a depth of 82 meters. Coast Guard ship failed to keep former survey ship afloat
The Mexican flagged, former survey ship „Altair“, 148 gt (IMO: 7338339) which had started to take in water with five people aboard in the morning of Sep 12, 2015, south-east of Gotland was reached by the Swedish patrol boat "KBV 033" during the afternoon. The crew shed an additional anchor and started the bilge pumps, but on Sep 13 the vessel sank on a water depth of eight meters two miles off the Southeast coast of Gotland with the masts protruding from the water. The ship had on board 1,2 cbm diesel fuel. The Coastguard had tried to pull the ship towards shore, but it was in such a bad state that the personnel had to be taken off for security reasons. Before the vessel sank, the Coast Guard sealed exhausts so that no diesel could leak out before the "Altair" started foundering stern first. The Coast Guard planned to send divers down to see if the oil could be drained. The crew of five aboard had been rescued by a lifeboat from Fårösund and a helicopter from Ronneby on Sep 12 at noon. The crew of the "Altair" had been taken off by the RS Vändburg with the lifeboat "Rescue Fårösund" and a helicopter from Ronneby and taken ashore on Sep 12 at noon. Coastguard assisting vessel in danger of sinking
The "KBV 033" was heading to the Mexican flagged, former survey ship „Altair“, 148 gt (IMO: 7338339) after it started to take in water with five people aboard in the morning of Sep 12, 2015, south-east of Gotland four kilometers off Fide beween Grötlingbogrund and Grötlingboudd. The Swedish Coast Guard was alerted at 10:40 a.m. The Coast Guard environmental protection vessel „KBV 033“ from Oskarshamn and the „KBV 313“ from Oxelösund were dispatched with the first unit being expected to arrive during the afternoon. The situation aboard the „Altair“ was worsening after the engine stopped working and the pumps stopped. There were 1,200 liters of diesel fuel aboard. The ship was sailing from Stockholm to a shipyard in Klaipeda to be repaired. All on board took on life jackets and were readying two rafts.
