Katy B escorted to Hemiksem

Katy B in danger of foundering

Emergency services on Aug 10, 2011, struggled for hours in order to keep the self propelled German barge "Katy B" from sinking near the lock complex in Olen. After the cargo was unloaded, the ship was able to move to a dry dock for repairs. Around noon the captain had noticed the water ingress and moored the ship before starting to get some of his belongings from the ship. The fire brigade Herentals immediately demanded a crane to unload the cargo. The ship was loaded with 1.000 tons fertilizer which was dumped in the canal. Within 30 minutes enough was discharged to start the pumps and coppe the flooding. The main problem was that the leak could not be located. Divers from the fire rescue tried to survey the hull, but look underneath the ship was too dangerous in the circumstances given. In the afternoon it was decided that the entire cargo would haver to be unloaded and that the ship is cleaned on the spot before sailing for inspection and repair to a dry dock in Hemiksem. The shipping experienced limited disruption of the incident.
