Tanker towed disabled trimaran to shore

Thu Nov 12 10:19:05 CET 2015 Timsen

The "Chance" assisted a single hand sailorn and his disabled trimaran "Fearless" on Nov 11, 2015. They were brought to safety in Galveston, after being towed about 300 miles through the Gulf of Mexico by the tanker, then brought to shore by the Coast Guard and a commercial tow boat. The "Fearless" had left Port Aransas on Nov. 5, en route to Key West until the rudder broke. The skipper had signaled for help to Sector Houston-Galveston watchstanders using a satellite device on Nov 9 from his 40-foot trimaran, located about 300 miles southeast of Galveston. After coordinating with Rescue Coordination Center New Orleans, the watchstanders in New Orleans sent out a SafetyNET emergency broadcast for anyone in the boater's area who may be able to assist. The captain of the "Chance" diverted his course to assist, taking the trimaran in tow toward Galveston. As the tanker neared shore in the morning of Nov 11, a Station Galveston 45-foot response boat crew picked up the tow 16 miles out and brought him within range of commercial assistance. TowBoat US met them and assisted in the final tow to port. Report with photo: http://www.uscgnews.com/go/doc/4007/2635826/
