Kang Sheng Kou offloaded oil rig on unexpected stop at Nanaimo
On June 6, 2011, the 44 ballast tanks inside the "Kang Sheng Kou" were flooded in order to release the ship's cargo, the offshore drilling platform "Spartan 151". The rig was carried into the Nanaimo harbour on the deck of the heavy-lift vessel on June 1 on its journey from the Gulf of Mexico to Alaska's Cook Inlet. The drilling platform was floated off the ship and tugboats towed it to Duke Point, where it will undergo repairs before proceeding to the Cook Inlet. Cosco and Spartan Drilling had decided not to re-enter U.S. waters to avoid a penalty under the Jones Act, U.S. shipping legislation. The act requires goods transported on water between U.S. ports be on ships built and flagged in the U.S., and owned and crewed by U.S. citizens, to support the U.S. maritime industry.
Transport with rig reached Nanaimo
The "Kang Sheng Kou arrived" mooreed in the Port of Nanaimo carrying a massive offshore drilling platform in the evening of May 31, 2011. She could remain in harbour several weeks, if owners decide to hire local contractors for repairs to damages received during a long circuitous voyage from Texas. The owner of the rig is looking to have some maintenance and inspection work done to the rig prior to departing to Alaska.
