Ship converted for search for lost cargo ship off Penzance
The 'Jorgen Amundsen' will be used in the search for the cargo vessel 'Mark', which sank off Cornwall with all hands on the same fateful night as the Penlee Lifeboat Disaster on Dec 19, 1981, when the 'Solomon Browne' and the cargo m/v 'Union Star', which they were attempting to assist, succumb to the fierce conditions, in which a total of 22 lives were lost Debris of the 'Mark' was found washed up on beaches after the 61-metre, 499-tonne ship got into difficulties and went down with a cargo of china clay and all six crew members off Penzance, but the remains of the vessel have never been found and identified. Now Frederik Lunde, a Swede who has been in Cornwall since April 2022, wants to find the ship and give some closure to the families of its crew. The 'Jorgen Amundsen' has been turned into a survey vessel to examine a possible wreck site in 50 meters depth about 13 kilometers from the coast. She has been berthed in Penzance since April 4, 2022.
