Work boat rescued distressed Russians
Two Grieg Seafood employees saved two Russian tourists on Apr 8, 2018. Their cutter had experienced serioous problems outside Repvåg in the Porsanger Fjord, when the engine suddenly stopped in bad weather in the afternoon. The boat went adrift in dense snow, heavy winds and high swell. The tourists contacted the local rescue center, which then contacted the main rescue center. They had life jackets and Russian mobile phones, but did not have radio and no positioning possibilities. A rescue boat from Havøysund was deployed as well as a Sea King helicopter from Lakselv Airport Banak. In addition, Kystradio Nord contacted Grieg Seafood's work boat "Jens". On board were Dag Rune Lind and Kenneth Nikolaisen. They headed directly towards the tourist boat and managed to attach a rope to us. The weather was too bad to take the Russians aboard, so they were taken to shore aboard the boat which had drifted straight to the open sea. If the boat had capsized, the Russians would have survived only a few minutes in water temperatures of 1.8 degrees.
