Malian man sentenced to jail as ringleader

A 36-year-old Malian man, accused of being the ringleader of a group of migrants trying to get to Britain who forced their way onto te "Calais Seaways" in Calais, was sentenced on MArch 4 to four months in jail. The man was charged with "wrongful boarding of a ship", "unlawful entry into a restricted area", and refusal to provide his fingerprints when detained. The migrant, who had been in Calais for a few months, denied being a ringleader, saying he just followed the group of migrants who broke into the harbour area and then boarded the "Calais Seaways" ferry which had just arrived from Dover in England. He was tried and sentenced in the nearby northern French town of Boulogne. A total of 63 migrants were detained in the incident late on March 2, many of whom had tried to hide aboard the ship. In the morning of March 3, firemen talked down the last of the migrants who had climbed high above the deck to a walkway attached to the ship's funnel.

Migrants stormed ferry in Calais

More than 100 migrants stormed the Calais ferry terminal in a coordinated push to board the Dover-bound "Calais Seaways" onMarch 2, 2019, at 8.30 p.m., forcing the authorities to delay its departure while they rounded them up. About half of the migrants managed to scramble onto the ferry and conceal themselves on board. Two fell into the sea and were rescued with slight hypothermia. French police arrested at least 46 migrants but were continuing to search the vessel, where it was believed several were hiding. Some were discovered on an external catwalk attached to the ship’s funnel and firefighters were trying to persuade them to come down, according to Jean-Philippe Vennin, a Prefecture official. Firemen managed to get close to them but did not succeed in talking them down, so a second attempt was started. The ferry had arrived in Calais from Dover carrying 211 passengers and 75 crew members. The migrants used a maintenance ladder to clamber aboard the ferry at high tide. Police oversaw the offloading of all the cars and lorries arriving from Britain before carrying out a top-to-bottom search of the vessel. It was moved during the night to avoid further delays while police searched it. At least two ferries were delayed from coming into port as police completed the search. They had to wait at some distance from the French coast before being allowed into port. again, a dozen migrants were still on board. The latter were finally dislodged at the end of the morning from the chimney, where they had taken refuge. The intervention was complicated by the weather conditions with strong winds and rain, and the GRIMP firefighters were called upon. One crew member was injured after an altercation with a migrant. Ferry crew found nine stowaways

The "Calais Seaways" was delayed in the morning of Jan 12, 2016, after crew members found nine suspected illegal immigrants on board and called the authorities. The ferry ran an hour late while the police and ambulance staff were called. The clandestines were checked over by an ambulance crew at the port as a precaution and were handed over to the authorities.
