Mechanical failure off Cavo Doro
In the morning of April 26, 2019, the "Iohann Mahmastal" with a crew of 17 on board suffered a mechanical failure in the waters of Cavo Doro. The ship was carrying a cargo of 6.000 tons marble stones from Thassos. The damage was repaired by the crew, and the ship resumed its voyage to Dordrecht, ETA May 6.
Convoy stuck in ice
The two bulk carriers "Iohann Mahmastal" and "Sinegorsk" and two icebreakers have been stuck in the ice off the Russian coast near Pevek on the Chukchi Peninsula (Chukotka Peninsula). According to the captain of the icebreaker "Kapitan Dranitsyn", the situation was not critical. There were food and fuel reserves. After getting more information about ice conditions the convoy will proceed on the route. The bulk carriers are operated by Rosmorport and being escorted by the icebreakers "Kapitan Dranitsy"n and "Admiral Makarov". The convoy remained at anchorage near Cape Shelagsky. The ice conditions are difficult – measuring 10 points on a 10-point scale. The thickness of ice in the area exceeds one meter (three feet) with ridged ice 2.5 meters (eight feet) thick. The vessels arrived in Pevek from Arkhangelsk along the Northern Sea Route in early January 2017. They made a successful midwinter cargo crossing, the the first such crossing since Soviet times. They wree delivering construction material for a pier being built for the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power station. The power station will be transported to Chukotka via the Northern Sea Route and assembled there in 2018.
