Crew of Hyundai Unity commended for rescue operation

Thu Jul 18 10:56:26 CEST 2013 Timsen

Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Mark Neeland, supervisor Activities Far East Marine Inspection Detachment Singapore, presented a U.S. Coast Guard Public Service Commendation to the crew of the "Hyundai Unity" at the Port of Singapore on July 16, 2013. The crew received the award in recognition of their support of a Coast Guard search and rescue mission. On Mar 4, 2013, the "Hyundai Unity" responded to a request from Rescue Sub-Center Guam to assist the sailing vessel "Alingano Maisu", a traditional dual-hulled sailing canoe from Palau Community College that began taking on water with ten sailors aboard. The "Hyundai Unity" immediately changed course and proceeded to the vessel location where they were able to rescue all ten sailors and eventually transfer them over to the Coast Guard Cutter "Washington" for transport to Palau. AMVER vessel saved 10 shipwrecked canoeists

Mon Mar 04 10:57:14 CET 2013 Timsen

Multiple agencies and the "Hyundai Unity" worked together to rescue 10 from the Philippine Sea, 90 miles NE of Palau, on Mar 4, 2013. The U.S. Coast Guard in coordination with the Republic of Palau Division of Maritime Law Enforcement and the Royal Australian Navy Maritime Surveillance Advisor provided assistance after a 60-foot traditional sailing canoe traveling from Palau to the outer islands of Yap State in Micronesia was distressed. The vessel had ten crewmembers onboard, including students from the Palau Community College; Palauan, Japanese, and US Citizens. Using a satellite telephone, the canoe contacted officials at the Community College at 6:30 a.m. and indicated the vessel was breaking apart and sinking. The Palau Community College officials contacted the appropriate Palauan Agencies in accordance with their National Search and Rescue Plan, who requested assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard. The Coast Guard launched the "Apra Harbor" and the Guam based Coast Guard Cutter "Washington" to assist and requested long range aircraft support from the U.S. Navy’s Combined Task Force 72, located in Kadena. The Coast Guard also identified the "Hyundai Unity" transiting in the vicinity of the distress location on its way from Brisbane to Kaoshiung, and contacted the vessel asking for their assistance. The vessel diverted from their course and maneuvered towards the distress position. The crew of the "Hyundai Unity" spotted the crew at 11:32 a.m. and recovered them. They were transferred to the "Washington" and taken to Palau.
