Search for crew member lost over board suspended

Sat Mar 12 12:39:09 CET 2022 Timsen

The 'HMM Gdanksk', en route from Antwerp to Hamburg, lost a crew member over board on the North Sea early on March 12, 2022. At 10 a.m., the MRCC of the DGzRS found out about the missing 41-year-old seaman, who was last seen around 5 a.m. and who probably fell over board. The container ship had issued a "Mayday" call 30 nautical miles (about 56 kilometers) north-northwest of Helgoland. A "Mayday Relay" was issued and a large-scale search initiated. The lifeboats 'Anneliese Kramer' of the DGzRS station Cuxhaven and 'Hans Hackmack' in Helgoland and a large number of other ships paticipated in the search for the Philippine seaman, including the multi-purpose ships "Neuwerk" and "Mellum" of the Waterways and Shipping Administration, the fisheries protection vessel "Seefalke" and the fisheries research ship "Walther Herwig III", the emergency tug "Nordic", the federal police ship "Bad Düben", the surveying and research ship "Atair" of the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH), the customs ship "Helgoland", several wind farm ships and the container ship "Bianca Rambow". The operation was supported from the air by a Dutch oil surveillance aircraft, a German Navy SAR helicopter, a Federal Police helicopter, a helicopter from NHC Northern Helicopter and one from Wiking Helicopter. With good visibility but challenging conditions, the units involved systematically searched the search area defined and regularly updated by the MRCC. At that time, there was a south-easterly wind of around six Beaufort and a swell of around three meters with a water temperature of six degrees Celsius. At nightfall, the operation was stopped at around 7 p.m.
