Fine of 310.000 Euros proposed for oil spill
The Huelva Maritime Captaincy has proposed a fine of 310,000 Euros for Disttribuidora Marítima Petrogás, owner of the "Herbania" after closing the investigation initiated 11 months ago for a fuel spill that occurred on April 17, 2021 and affected the coast of Doñana, in the stretch between Mazagón and Matalascañas. The corresponding department of the General Directorate of the Merchant Marine proposed a penalty of 100,000 Euros for negligent dumping, another 170,000 Euros for the cost of the cleaning work carried out by Salvamento Marítimo and the Port Authority of Huelva, another 30,000 Euros for not reporting the spill and 10,000 Euros for omitting data in the ship's logbook. The report considered the spill as a result of a negligent action when the "Herbania" was anchored in the port of Huelva, receoving fuel from the tanker "Oizmendi". The oil stain covered an area of one kilometer without the ship's captain or the company notifying the incident at the time.. Apparently, Petrogás reported two days later an overflow that did not go beyond the cover. The shipping company, DISA's naval arm based in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, has not received notification of the proposed sanction from the Huelva Maritime Captaincy and will wait to receive it to present allegations.
