Barge in danger of sinking on the Waal
On Nov 28, 2013, the "Helena Tineke" suffered water ingress in the bengine room on the Waal at Beuningen possibly after having run onto a crib. The ship was carrying a cargo of coal. The ship had a leak of about 50 centimeters length and was in danger of sinking. It was moored at an emergency berth at the approach of the Maas-Waal Canal in the outer harbour of Weurt where the captain raised alarm as the pumps could not cope the flooding. Rescue forces were on scene at 8.45 a.m. At 9.15 a.m. a fire boat was alongside, also a boat of Rijkswaterstaat was on scene as well as commercial salvors. The fire rescue boarded the ship and assisted in dewatering the foreship. An oil boom was laid out as a precaution. The leak was sealed with a leak sail which was pulled over the hull and the water then pumped out.
